Top 10 Movies to Watch Out For in 2011
No.10 Cowboys & Aliens
If Star Wars was a Western set in space, then Cowboys & Aliens is taking that formula to heart. It stars Han Solo and James Bond, er, Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig as two rootin’ tootin’ cowboys who have a more politically correct nemesis to battle than your typical Indians.

No.9 War Horse
A movie about a young man who follows his beloved horse into the First World War seems like the kind of epic melodrama that panders to awards season. Well that’s perfectly fine since the director mounting War Horse is Steven Spielberg and he does awards bait so well -- think Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan and Munich. Adapted from Michael Morpurgo’s children’s novel, which has already been made into a stage play, Spielberg’s War Horse might as well just announce its awards nominations in advance. - http://www.askmen.com/top_10/entertainment/top10-movies-were-looking-forward-to-in-2011_9.html
No.8 Sucker Punch
From Zack Snyder, the crafty little director who brought us 300 and Watchmen, comes a trippy-looking visual feast of chicks in miniskirts going to battle with dragons, giant mechanical samurais and whatever else this movie can imagine. Emily Browning stars as Baby Doll, a young fox locked up in an insane asylum, who lets her mind set her loose in a CGI-happy fantasy world where women kick ass. The guys will be lining up for this one.

No.7 The Descendants
The last time director Alexander Payne made a movie, it was the prickly and hilarious buddy road trip Sideways. Well, Payne is back with The Descendants, which stars George Clooney as a wealthy landowner who reunites with his estranged daughters and takes them in search of his comatose wife’s lover. That’s a lot to chew on for one family, but clearly ripe territory for Payne who excels at making movies about men at odds with life.

No.6 Moneyball
The movie about Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane, and his attempts to put together a solid roster on a miniscule budget, has been met with considerable production dilemmas since Steven Soderbergh was attached to direct. Well, Moneyball is finally being pitched into theaters with the underrated director Bennett Miller (Capote) relieving Soderbergh at the mound. And Miller has an all-star team joining him with Brad Pitt, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Jonah Hill taking on lead roles.

No.5 Hugo Cabret
Scorsese hasn’t made a movie (not including docs) without Leonardo DiCaprio in more than a decade. So, Hugo Cabret, Scorsese’s first 3-D movie, must have had considerable pull to part the director from his muse. The Harry Potter-esque story follows the titular orphan, who discovers his father’s disheveled automata (those windup toys magicians like to use) and unravels the mysteries surrounding it and his own life.
The movie is based on the very cinematic bestselling “picture” book by Brian Selznick (relative to legendary Hollywood producer David O. Selznick). Selznick’s inspiration for the book is none other than Georges Melies, the magician turned pioneering filmmaker who pretty much invented the first-ever special effects in silent films like A Trip to the Moon. So, in Hugo Cabret you have a magical adventure that takes its roots from the cinema’s origins and stars teenage “it” girl Chloe Grace Moretz (the head-splitting sprite from Kick-Ass), Jude Law, Ray Winstone, Emily Mortimer (sigh), and Sacha Baron Cohen. Oh, and did we mention it’s directed by Scorsese?

No.4 Contagion
With SARS and swine flu grabbing headlines in recent years, it's no surprise that someone would venture into making a viral outbreak movie (one that doesn’t have zombies). But Contagion doesn’t seem like it will be your generic thriller. It’s directed by Hollywood’s most reliably indie-minded filmmaker, Steven Soderbergh and penned by Scott Z. Burns, who also wrote The Bourne Ultimatum and The Informant!. This promising nail-biter also stars a powerhouse cast that includes Matt Damon, Kate Winslet and the to-die-for Marion Cotillard.

No.3 A Dangerous Method
David Cronenberg’s movies are prone to dissecting the human anatomy, but his latest has him taking the scalpel to psychology. A Dangerous Method stars Cronenberg’s recent muse Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud, Michael Fassbender (Hunger, Inglourious Basterds) as Carl Jung, and Keira Knightley as the troubled, sexually charged subject who creates a nuisance for their latest theories on psychoanalysis. The material may sound too textbook but we have faith that Cronenberg will make a solid and sexy thriller out of human misbehavior.

No.2 On the Road
The ultimate guy novel, the beat generation and Sal Paradise are all finally headed to the big screen. Jack Kerouac’s On the Road has been a stalled project for decades, collecting dust as Francis Ford Coppola sat on the rights. But “The Godfather” has finally found the right man to navigate this definitive road trip. Walter Salles, the director who previously sent us on a commie road adventure in his Che Guevara movie, The Motorcycle Diaries, is revving up On the Road with Sam Riley (Control) and Garrett Hedlund (TRON: Legacy) playing Paradise and Dean Moriarty, respectively. The stars are relatively unknown, but Salles couldn’t stop Hollywood’s elite from wanting to take part even in small doses. Expect appearances from Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams and Kristen Stewart.

No.1 The Tree of Life
We know, we know. This movie ranked high on this same list last year. But director Terrence Malick is a perfectionist whose finishing touches postponed The Tree of Life to next summer. Either way, any Malick movie is an event, especially since the director -- a certified visual poet -- has only made five features in an illustrious career that spans more than 30 years. Malick’s latest expressionistic and existential film stars Sean Penn as a disillusioned man in the modern world haunted by memories of his brute father (played by Brad Pitt) and raises questions about nature, spirituality and men. The dazzling new trailer is in itself more sweeping than all the movies that came out in 2010, making The Tree of Life a film with so much anticipation it bears repeating

2011 Grammy Nominations: Eminem Leads The Pack
Okay, at this point, perhaps it can be said officially that Eminem's back to the 'game' fully. He's already got the year's best-selling album (and a pair of the biggest singles), and now he's the most-nominated artist of the 53rd annual Grammy Awards.

On Wednesday night (December 1), Em picked up a staggering 10 Grammy nods, including Song and Record of the Year (for "Love the Way You Lie") and Album of the Year (for Recovery, which is also up for Rap Album of the Year). He also scored noms for Best Rap Solo Performance (for "Not Afraid"), Pop Collaboration With Vocals (for his turn on B.o.B's "Airplanes Part II") and Best Rap Song (for "Lie").
Following (not so) closely behind him is Bruno Mars, who landed seven nominations, followed by Jay-Z, Lady Antebellum and Lady Gaga, who earned six apiece. B.o.B and John Legend are among the names who will head into the Grammys with five nominations.

A Beautiful Morning Focus
So earlier this morning I was thinking about 'Focus'. Yeah, focus as in the power of concentration, the ability to remain not just determined to a dream but one that maintains your focus on the dream.
Even though I was late for work something in me just made me pause for a while to stare diligently at the charming blue sky for some time right there inside my compound. However, I noticed two amazing things that so far has come to be of great positive impact to my once bothered mind. Here:
(1) First I noticed a bird flying high up in the sky, I stared at it for a while; I watched it fly forth, backwards, in circles and downwards, I enjoyed the whole sight.
(2) Then suddenly I noticed very tiny flies flying in circles or say clusters few metres away from my eyes, I took a quick glance at the flies then returned to the bird. I did that 2,3 times after which I found the little flies interesting and thought to just take few seconds to notice them proper. I did. But when I returned to my main focus - the bird- it was gone.
I was sad, I felt I just lost something tangible. I felt I lost a major substance, deal or even if I may say, project. It however seemed like a coincidence because yesterday night I was pondering deeply on a serious issue which needed fast intervention. And this morning I found a perfect illustration that gave me a clear answer to my list of questions/worries.

See?
Lesson learnt: Because we (humans) bother alot about the little things that really do not matter we end up forgetting the very tangible and needful that need our most concerns.
So here it is, FOCUS ON THE NEEDFUL, THE IMPORTANT AND SEE THE TINY WORRIES HANDLE THEMSELVES.
Good morning and enjoy a beautiful day.

THE BIGGEST PRIZE: Genevieve Nnaji, Don Jazzy, 8 others for The Future Awards Young Person of the Year!
The Central Working Committee for Nigeria’s most respected youth event, The Future Awards, has decided to unveil the long list for the biggest award, Young Person of the Year, one week before schedule!

Which Would you Rock: A Touch of Red or A Splash of Red?
Okay, these two pictures have something in common and that is RED! I love red, it could even go for my second favourite colour, well after black though.
Here I share pictures of two young, cool and fly guys in the entertainment industry - Dimeji Alara (writer and stylist) and Tommy Efe (Presenter) and would like you to share your opinion about their looks.

My Best Dressed at the SMVA 2010 is ...
The short dress drift had a long toll at the recently held Soundcity Music Video Awards with the likes of Omowunmi Akinnifesi, Eku Edewor, Omawunmi, Adora Oleh, Zizi Cardow, Ruby Dabbour amongst other guests. While quite a number of looks made it to my favourites, one really looked adorably chic and feminine and that will be the glam look of ex beauty queen and actress, Ibinabo Fiberisima. She really rocked a blue sequined rear baring flow dress. I really loved her look – with little make up and ornaments she rocked that look.

A Return to 1960
As many super-sized, ultra successful restaurants as there are in this city, there are at least ten times as many underdogs – struggling under-the-radar spots that open and quickly close, mostly unnoticed, often with years left on their leases and no more than a few hundred meals served. These are spots that don’t get read about in the glossies. These are the places that keep the mortality rate of the restaurants business so high. In many cases, their fate is sealed from the beginning. Often times affordable rent means a locale with poor street traffic. Passionate chefs often have big dreams without the experience to back them up, or a budget for more than a green management team. And certainly there’s no cash left over for PR, or even more basic things like stylish décor. This week, I came upon a snug and charming restaurant that is unique…but it’s also one that will survive. Because this particular restaurant is fly. I speak of a jewel-toned bistro called 1960, located on an appealing street called Olunfunlola Okikiolu by the stretch of Toyin Street in Ikeja. While the street does not carry much beauty, what lies beyond the doors of 1960’s façade is. 1960 is owned by a charming man named Akin Adeoya, the CEO of Marketing Mix and Publisher of the popular marketing magazine- M2. Akin Adeoya is a formal gentleman. He can be found at his restaurant most nights, casual but smartly dressed. He welcomes every guest personally and his mission seems to be as simple as spreading joy and happiness through food and drinks.1960 restaurant is a dining haven that treats dinners like they never want them to dine anywhere else, I was quite surprised by the attention I was given by the beautiful waitress who each minute came to apologise for the delay of the menu, but I couldn’t complain because of the flavours the chef transported towards me. While I waited my meal I couldn’t count the number of delicacies that passed by me – apparently, this is one thing about 1960, although the meal could take more time than expected but when it comes, it’s so beautiful looking and tastefully satisfying, and that simply gave me a gastronomic experience I’ve not had in a while.I happened upon 1960 through a friend and with my other friends, Gbemi and Eniola, prolific culinarians whose opinions on matters of food I trust implicitly. We settled in on a frigid afternoon few weeks back and were quickly welcomed by a gentle waiter (in a great dark suit) he directed us to a seat at a cozy pillowed banquette opposite a dark-wooded bar lit from above by beautiful light. With 1960, Akin has created an oasis-like ode to his native land. Although 1960 comprises of the unique three – the lodge (which has the best of all that defines comfort) the bar, stocked with a wide range of wines both continental and intercontinental but the restaurant however small and simple, is also beautiful, with walls filled with beautiful paintings by great artistes. The dining is lovely and the tables are heavy solid dark wood with glass top matched with straight plush chairs. While we caught up on the past few months cup of groundnut that was presented us with our drinks as we waited patiently for our meal The beauty, warmth, serenity and sophistication of the environment at the 1960 restaurant, bar and lodge is on a completely different realm to its competitors. I specially like the lounge area at 1960 as its ideal for those special moments you need to impress a client or business partner with your good sense of class and style during lunch or dinners.Hot as it is 1960 restaurant has come to be on the list of top favourites for both diners and lodgers particularly on the mainland. And since recently, when all around Lagos boasts one restaurant or the other, good diners like me have been on the look out for places where there’s a good measure of ir-regrettable dining experience. And 1960 is one on top these places that has definitely got my taste buds savouring for more of their deliciously sauced meals in the not less than 16 degree Celsius air conditioned atmosphere. It is one chilled place that I called to be rescued from freezing. The entire concept is unique and pleasant; the food- a combination of continental and Nigerian dishes in an African style of dining that makes you feel at home – the setting; tightly arranged, colourful lantern lit wooden dining tables, wooden shutters; simple but exclusive, and the music all play to create an amiable and relaxing ambience. The décor is in cool cream with light brown accents and large collection of beautiful art works adorning every corner of the environment gives it a strong African influence. When entering 1960, I imagined a place where waiters would bombard me with skewers of deliciously prepared meals or perhaps grilled meat – on an as much as I can eat basis. Well, I wasn’t disappointed, and just like that I’ve been introduced to the redefinition of fine Nigerian cuisine and range of fine drinks sourced from all parts of the world. Fish, conch, land crabs and rock lobster – called crawfish by the locals – have long been the bedrock of local cuisine. Although a few menus, mostly in upscale resorts even in Ikeja, feature dishes with Italian, Asian, 1960 restaurant still serves simple Nigerian fare, with a few nods to Continental influence. 1960 is not particularly dieter-friendly. Breakfast tend toward the hearty eggs, toast bread, yam and egg variety. At lunch, there are variations on a few standards; fried fish fillets served on slightly sweet buns; cracked fish which is tenderized, deep fried meat with tasteful sauce, all usually sided with local favourites like rice, but there’s also the tasty fish pepper soup that is simply tantalizing. And while dinner promises more options for the local favourites like semovita, pounded yam, fufu, garri, amala, rice, fried chicken or minced lobster fish cooked with tomatoes, garlic and onions – which seem to be the very common dishes though. It got me wondering if there really are more dishes we possess in Nigeria , just then it occurred to me that almost nothing is grown locally, so high-quality fruits and vegetables which of course will produce sweet tasteful menus are a rarity, especially right after the recent scarcity of important cooking stuffs. By the same token, I wouldn’t be surprised if all dishes aren’t available every day. The remoteness these days means meals aren’t cheap, even in the humblest spot. 1960 is a good place to go on a quieter day with a group of friends, - - as I have turned habit- get a promising meal and drink to the good life. The experience is simply orgasmic and not to mention the numerous celebrities that hang out at this great restaurant, bar and hotel.
