No Bite-Size Pieces at Marco Polo

How've you been people? Here's another dining experience i heard recently. As published...Enjoy!

Severally, I passed through Marco Polo Restaurant on Karim Kotun Street, Victoria Island, but the first time I stepped into the building was for a business meeting. I wasn’t that impressed, because it appeared like just another of its type, well, after my experience I could not pick any special thing or feeling from it all.
Although Marco Polo is aware of the sensitive nature of the restaurant, business, catering and food service in general, I think the restaurant pays too much attention to customizing everything they own. From the uniforms, badges, menu cards, table covers, crockery and cutlery. I wonder why they all kept shouting “Marco Polo!”
Customer service is on the average at Marco Polo as the waiters are considerably on call, although it seems you have to repeat the order to the waiter, at first I thought it was the particular one that attended to us. But not until I noticed the voice from the next table repeating for the second time, “How many times do I have to say that exactly?”
On the other hand, cleanliness is a big one at Marco Polo, the environs is simply charming, a good dash of colours, the colours and designs still stay clean and beautiful on the walls. The convenience is fresh and the atmosphere is just cool, for that I felt relieved. At least it’s said that a good atmosphere encourages a good dine.
Marco Polo Chinese Restaurant offers a menu of food and beverages with a distinctive taste – which depends on how active your taste buds. The restaurant which started about seven years ago started out offering the best service, but based on regular diners at Marco Polo, it has come to be a-less- than average restaurant.
Marco Polo offers three main menus; the Main menu, the Vegetarian menu and the Chef Wung’s Special menu. Because it’s a business meeting and two, it’s my side paying the bill, I decided to take it cool, Cool like, just get the usual, so I did and saved everyone my speech of ‘what I want in it and what I don’t’. But the ’opponent’ didn’t care about who was paying or not, at least it was tagged a business dinner at 7pm.
There’s one thing though, Sushi at Marco Polo is simply irresistible, when I saw it, and I thought it was a crown of shame on us for dining there, but a first taste of the meal restored me back to life. Marco Polo offers a real alternative; the sushi is a welcome culinary addition to the other varieties on course, the fabulously fresh sushi and sashimi is made beautifully along with traditional dishes which makes the dining experience a fusionist affair, the menu is simply seasonal. The food was great as mentioned but my Chicken Tepanyaki was such a big chunky fillet, that I had to use a knife and fork to cut/eat it. I don't normally complain about there being too much food, but I always thought Japanese food should be small, bite-size pieces you can pick-up with chopsticks?
The intimate dining room is clean and crisp, with comfortable upholstered chairs and dark wood furniture squared up against a deep red wall. A striking tree sculpture, made from bamboo, spreads up the walls and across the ceiling, with lights dangling above the centre tables.

Hmm...I wasn't really impressed with this place at all. For a restaurant that openly boasts about winning lots of remarks, I expected award-winning food and service but the waiters and management seem to be out of the decent type. I really found this odd considering the wait-staff have a touch of snobbery. We ate beside the window to get a view of the beautiful street and the range of lovely cars parking in and out of the lot.

It seems all the things that made Marco Polo "Swell" are now gone? Now it is a typical sushi and tappanyaki on the Island. I don't write this to be mean or cruel the food is still good at Marco Polo but not what it once was. Maybe I will start eating somewhere else each Sunday since it seems there’ll always be a meeting at Marco Polo.

Hope you enjoyed it....

Savour Succulent Chocolate Mousee at Saipan.

Hi there, how's your week been? Mine's been very hectic but interesting too, guess your's been fantastic as well. Well, I don't know if you guys have been reading 'The Diner' in the Sunday Life Guardian magazine. This is one of the columns i run in the Sunday Guardian, the diner shares her dining experiences - the good, the bad and the very ugly. okay, so like i mentioned in my 'The Return' note that i'll be sharing few of those articles right here...therefore i will like you to read and drop your comments. You can also share your experiences too and perhaps drop names of good restaurants you've been too. I believe that will give me more ideas on where to be..yikes!

Here it is as published:

For a while now, I’ve always heard that Saipan restaurant is not just another Chinese restaurant in Nigeria, but ‘The Chinese Restaurant’ in Nigeria. Well, I cannot really testify to that yet as I am about to confirm that, right now and now as I sit expectantly for this experience. But from first stare and observation I would say truthfully that the tranquil and stylish environment here is second to none. And while my friend here believes the food and service are first class and prices are reasonable I still feel more could be added to the glamour therein.
Saipan appears as one those places that you could say is just there but has a magnetic feel that will tempt the most seasoned diner back again and again. A friend of mine once said, “If you have not been to Saipan, you have not arrived yet.” I was actually amazed by the modern and traditional Chinese décor blended nicely together, which gives the restaurant and wine bar a unique concept in fine dining.
Quite unusual of me though, I had the opportunity of going to the kitchen; the kitchen is ultra-modern and purpose-built. The chefs looked A team, experienced, talented and like they were carefully selected from top Chinese restaurants, which if so will be applaudable as the kitchen is the heart of the restaurant. The restaurant has a grand reception hall which is overwhelming even before you step into the main bar and restaurant. And while dining, I enjoyed a breathtaking view over The Lagos skyline.
The menu at Saipan is an extensive fusion between Asian dishes and authentic Chinese cuisine. And there’s also the main bar which is known to be the longest bar counter in Nigeria and can seat 20. Well, that’s another interesting one...the check continues though. Somehow, the cool background music with the combination of lighting and decor in the bar kept giving me this intoxicating and relaxing sensation. That also I like. While I diligently sipped my chilled Coke, I surveyed the bar and noticed a wide variety of wines, spirits, beers, minerals coffee (coffee, yay!) and tea. Yes, I also tried the house cocktail ‘Saipan fusion’. Comment? Simply charging.

I recognised many of the menu items, along with some unusual offerings. We (my colleague and I) played it safe, ordering pot stickers for appetizers, followed by snow peas with water chestnuts and BBQ pork chow mein. The food was brought out quickly, wasn't greasy, and tasted great.
Derived from a beautiful, unspoiled tropical paradise island situated in the pacific ocean where tourists go to relax and enjoy themselves, thus Saipan is the restaurant for people who have a taste for class and good food, says the waiter that served us. Quite impressive, Saipan prides itself on serving light-tasting and non-spicy food, and will definitely suit those with lighter palates. The Chief Chef here lets in on their secret formula: to whip up dishes with a touch of mum's cooking, to recreate the vibe of home-cooked dishes. Sincerely, I’ve not been to a restaurant of this kind, perhaps not in the real world, maybe in one of my numerous 5-star dream fantasies.
Saipan offers large menu with traditional Chinese restaurant items and a number of unusual offerings as well as authentic and attentive wait staff. The menu has a wide range of items from; noodles to dumplings to the usual western dishes. However, the restaurant and wine bar include a selection of desserts, which could be savoured and enjoyed from a succulent chocolate mousse and strawberry cheesecake to a lovely tiramisu or lemon gateau
For the main course, the Prawn menu is the signature dish at Saipan. Fresh prawns, cooked with herbal wine and the chef's secret herbs in stock, and with a really wicked concoction. The prawns were fresh and succulent; the soup was light with a hint of herbal taste. The herbs did not overpower the soup, as the sweetness of the prawns was evident in the soup too.

Saipan has friendly waiters, waitresses and hard working owner. They are clearly trying hard to be successful, the food is decent, prices fair, making this a good bet for a quick Chinese bite before a movie.

Say After me.....

People
Are
Talking
About.......The Power of Affirmation

Say after me.....’’I am a powerful, successful and spirited woman’’, ’’I am a powerful, successful and spirited woman’’, ’’I am a powerful, successful and spirited woman’’.
The power of affirmation, declaration and manifestation is a very unique and unfathomable source of good living. It has always been my guardian since I was (sceptically) introduced to it in my early days. It started a cycle in my life when I faced a cul-de-sac and desired new beginnings which I didn’t see coming. Every morning I woke up and longed for something extraordinary, something unique, something huge I could raise my head up high to say....Yes, I earned it!
As I grew older, my understanding of the power of affirmation increased tremendously. Then a wise mentor equipped me with the simple wand to the reinventions and I have witnessed the magic of it ever since. I have faced the start of each year, the beginning of every project and the limp into every relationship with the yearn for assurance, wishing each time that perhaps a fairy godmother or any good spirit would reveal it all and help me cope with the fast changing system of the world. But as an author says, ’’Solace does not always live in a crystal ball.’’ Where then does it laze?
The power of affirmation that leads to success lies no where else except in the tongue and the strength of the thoughts within. To every end and sphere of life I have applied the discipline of positive affirmation and come up with ideas and opportunities that breezes with optimism and under writes the notion of revival. With revival comes a sense of liberation, little wonder transformation happens everywhere and in the life of every individual. There is no permanent stagnancy in ANY life. Because for every being with a sense of reasoning and streams of thoughts, wanderings goes through. There are lots of mantras; the positive and negative ones. While it’s very possible to think positive, inspiring and successful thoughts within, but what the eyes sees of the future reconstructs and determines whether or not the supposed ’’positivity’’ within turns right or wrong.
To every sense of good is a measure of bad or evil. The power of affirmation goes a long way in any situation. And like the popular childhood adage, ’’action speaks louder than voice’’, the power to attract good and positivity is dependant on what the physical body finds to do in other to squirt the mind to constant optimism. But let’s not fool ourselves, we all like a sneak peak of the future as much as we should remain sober, positive and realistic, the speculation of things to come is part and parcel of living.
On the one hand, I don’t think any of us will be totally sad to see a play back of the previous year. It wasn’t kind or pretty for the psyche, but it was definitely a wake up call; and somehow I would refer to it as a rude awakening call as I saw meaning to much deeper matters but apparently the revelation came with a slam of regret and self-beatings. Most people I know and came across last year ended the year feeling the same – somewhat shaken and stirred. But not me, I ended the year with a very huge degree of positivity. I claimed, declared, desired, saw and received everything I longed for in the new year. Now is the year I saw and ventured into – the positives so desired are visible and more are in place – all to the power of affirmation.
Therefore, the power of affirmation, like every ’’good morning’’ and ’’good bye’’ means something. It’s not just about saying the say, but about saying the say with a great measure of affirmation. And positive affirmation it is. The power of positive affirmation doesn’t just let you say everything as it should be, even if you don’t necessarily understand why. It assures you there’s just something better, there’s a greater path and status.
At the start of everyday, we like robots, just climb on our routine system – wake up, dress up, traffic to, traffic back, dinner in traffic or no dinner at all, home, sleep. But we don’t realise that it’s during those trying periods that we need some mental support, some emotional gear up. The right moment to say the right words, ponder the positive thoughts and go ahead to affirm them. The world needs more positivity affirming people, these are not just people, but unique personalities that see beyond now, beyond the things that appear little but create greatness. Deep down we all know we like to spread the love, but usually, we are always too busy – obsessed with matters that ultimately doesn’t count.
How about you take up the challenge like most people are doing now, with a simple affirmation say ’’Yes, I can’’; (remember the Barack Obama mobilised slang). Pass on the message that brings hope and smile to faces. Learn to share a message of positivity, love and liberation and make affirmations of courage and hope, then believe that with the power of affirmation, everything is working right.....and really it is!

Top 10: Signs of a well-dressed man

10. Nice Shoes

Dingy, dirty shoes can sure make even the finest suit look, well, not so fine. Plain and simple, a freshly shined pair can spruce up even the most mediocre digs. Polish shoes in regular rotation about once a week, because they’re quite literally a reflection of you.

9. The Hair – Cut and Coifed

Overgrown, messy hair doesn’t just appeal to anyone. When a guy waits too long between cuts or worse, plastering and trimming the moustache, he simply moves from the dapper to douchebag. A guy needs to see a stylist or barber say every three to four weeks, this two rules are those coif-conscious men follow religiously.

8. Tailormade

No matter what your closet contains-luxe labels, fine fabrics, the newest trends – it doesn’t mean much without a flawless fit. And that piece of advice isn’t reserved for a custom collection of suits and sport coats. The same holds of true for everything from off-the-rack trousers to T-shirts. And there is only way to know if the cut is right; always try before you buy

7. Colour Coordinated

Somewhere along the line – say, after elementary school – you should have developed an eye for harmonizing hues. If you were left back a few grades in the dressing department, though, remember that colours should complement but never be matchy-matchy. In fact, feel free to experiment by contrasting colours in the most unexpected places – like a pair of pink socks with even the subtlest of suits.

6. Understated Elegance

It shouldn’t take a rainbow or let’s say lots of efforts to get you noticed. Then again, fading into background isn’t the answer either. The compromise? Wear one piece that says something (it can be anything from a blazer to a bracelet) and let the rest play a supporting role. In the end, your attire and accessories should make a statement, not put on a show.

5. Vintage Finds

Few men are fortunate enough to have a heap of valuable hand-me-downs; that’s where second-hand shopping comes in. This is high-end haberdashery at its best: think vintage watches and old school designer duds. They’re not always easy to find, but once you do come across them, you’ll never want to let go.

4. Signature Scent

Having an army of aromas isn’t just a waste of money, it’s downright olefactorily offensive. Men need, at most, just two fragnances. One should be lighter for daytime and warmer weather; the other more robust for nights and scent-crushing colder temps. With proper application (a spiritz behind the ears and on the wrists) both will become a part of you – not prematurely announce your arrival.

3. Pocket Protection

Somewhere along the line, men forgot about the little things in life – like the all-important pocket square. Use it with a tux or dress up a denim-sportcoat combo. They key, as you’ve already learned, is to mix rather than match. Employ the flat fold (look it up), and you’ll soon realize that the hanky is a minor detail with major impact

2. See Clearly

We’re not all blessed with natural 20/20. So, if you’re holding off on going under the knife and your stash of contacts isn’t cutting it, good-old eyeglasses are your option. And when it comes to specs, go bold or go home. Sure, they should always fit your face and it may take 30-plus pairs to find ones that do, but make certain they speak with the sureness of geek chic plastic or some angular metal

1. Confidence

Confidence- one word says it all. Without a little swagger in your step, nothing else matters.

19 Year-Old Hangs Himself

I heard this news over the weekend, it’s kind of tragic, and so I decided to share it. I got the details online from The Punch Newspapers. Here it goes as written by Femi Makinde for Sun Newspapers.
Tragedy struck in Basiri area of Ado Ekiti State capital on Saturday when a 19-year-old man Aderemi Ademosu, hanged himself inside a church auditorium. Ademosu was said to have been found inside the church auditorium by women who had gone to clean the place ahead of the Sunday service. Residents gave the name of the church as Alajahora. Journalists sighted the corpse still dangling from a ceiling hook on Sunday while the windows and doors of the church were shut.
The teenager’s corpse was dressed in T-shirt and pair of black jean trousers as at the time he decided to end his life. The teenager, who was wearing socks before he took his life, had removed his black shoes and put them beside a chair. Our correspondent gathered that Ademosu had two elder brothers in School Certificate Examination. Ademosu was said to have visited one of his siblings residing at Basiri area on Friday and committed suicide the next day. He did not, however, leave a suicide note. The spokesman of the state police command, Mr Mohammed Jimoh, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone, saying the body had been removed from the church.
He said the police did not suspect foul play in the incident, adding that an investigation was ongoing to determine why Ademosu took his life. “The police are aware of the suicide case. The body has been removed from the church. We invited pathologists who carried out an autopsy on the corpse. They said that violence did not take place before the boy died. No foul play at all.” he said

Joke of the Day
A man walked into a lawyer’s office and asked about the lawyer’s rates.
“$50 for three questions,”replied the lawyer.
Ïsn’t that awfully steep?”asked the lawyer.
“Yes,”the lawyer replied: “and what was your third question?”

The Return

Hello there, I know it’s been a while and here I am just saying ‘hello there’. Well, here it is, I am so sorry. Sincerely sorry and apologise for the long disappearance. Work’s been quite hectic so keeping steady on blogging has been demanding. But hey! It’s different now, I have something planned, and I mean I have a way around it all now. I promise to remain steady and relevant...lol
First things first though, I plan to make some changes on the page as you will notice as the week goes on, there’ll also be more pages in terms of content. That of course is aside the usual – events, entertainment gist, interviews and other random articles. New pages like People Are Talking About.., Top 10 Favourites Things, The Diner, How-to’s, Book, music and movie reviews, fashion, beauty, lifestyle, among others.
Well then, let me stop at that (you know, say less, act more). I should get back to planning the plan..lol for better production.

Have a terrific week ahead.

Remember: De’Buzz is back!

Enjoy!
